Samet’s uncle Murat Akbaş was the one who survived from 1999 earthquake..He is telling us his story on that night..

Akbaş was 25 years old in the 99 earthquake. The house he lived in was destroyed, he was left under the rubble with his wife and child.

"We went to the living room that night because it was a little cooler than ever. We made a mattress. I even got angry with my son.I told him, “you don't keep us up, you always wake up at the same time, are you afraid of something”. At that moment, there was a light. A very interesting sound that I have never heard. That night, my mind suddenly went away, because my child was crying, my son was close to 3 years old. You open your eyes and it's dark. It's like you're in the grave."

At that time, coughing started. Our throats started to burn due to the cement of the collapsed building. We started to sneeze. When I touched it, I felt  our parquets. So I said I'm in the building, I'm still alive. We were able to go out with my son by hearing the dogs' voices. My wife was not with me at that moment. I called her. "I don't know for sure, she was on the balcony. Her foot fell under the beam that fell in the garden. I saved her."

We saw that Ankara Metropolitan Municipality firefighters, search and rescue team with dogs are detecting places at work. I used to be a person who loved dogs very much now. But maybe this was my turning point in K9, the biggest reason why I wanted to be in the dog search team or the biggest reason we wanted to establish it. The turning point was August 17."

When he survived the wreck, the first thing he encountered were rescue dogs. The doors of a new era opened for Akbaş at that moment. From that day on, he devoted himself to saving lives, and his attempts yielded results. A dog search and rescue team affiliated to Sakarya Fire Department was established. Murat Akbaş is a member of the team. He was one of the 8 thousand people who ran to Izmir right after the earthquake with his dog "Baron".
